Beer Advocate gives Hair of the Dog’s Matt an A, while Rate Beer gives it a 100, so when we got our hands on a bottle we were extremely happy. That happiness drifted away very quickly once the bottle was open and we discovered our bottle was completely flat. We know that this one is a sipper, but the lack of carbonation made drinking what should have been a mind-blowing experience very hard to swallow.
About the beer: Hair of the Dog’s Matt is brewed using two Munich malts, two Smoked malts and two types of Belgian candy sugar. It was aged in 33 year old Bourbon barrels and Apple Eau de Vie barrels for about one year. The Bourbon aroma was extremely strong (as expected) but with zero carbonation there wasn’t anything to balance it out with.
We’re big fans of Hair of the Dog and won’t let this experience stop us from having other beers of theirs.
