During the 19th and 20th centuries nearly 4 million tons of “black diamonds” were removed from the coal mines where the Sacramento Delta and Mt. Diablo come together 30 miles northeast of San Francisco. Thus the brewery located ion this area named Black Diamond is appropriate as these miner folks worked long hours and a good beer after a long dark day was common.
The Black Diamond Saison is one to behold. Deliciously refreshing with a bright amber color and little head. The yeast gets spicy, not overly so, but enough that you know it’s there. The real stars of this brew are the ginger, cinnamon, orange peel and grains of paradise. Now that we know we have a brew pub so close by, Black Diamond is on our list to try more and if you’re ever in Concord, CA, definitely come by.
